Katherine Regional Arts

NT - Australia

The Pandanus Project

The success of past weaving projects has spread the word and created demand from women in communities where little support and assistance is provided for activities. There is a huge need for improving well-being, self-esteem, maintaining cultural traditions and developing artistically into new areas, as well as passing on skills and knowledge to younger generations.

Providing employment capacity for Indigenous women through the cultural practice of weaving is an appropriate method to increase capacity to generate income for community families. Katherine Regional Arts Inc. is excited to support local Indigenous women, Andrina Duncan and Dorcus Thompson, to develop and train with Adrienne Kneebone (Fibre Artist) as fellow tutors.

The arts work where all else has failed. Our work is with those that would normally not have access to the arts. Our work is not only about making the arts available but ensuring that those we work with are the carriers of the story. Our work is also very much about underlining the importance of the arts without the word “therapy” which is so often simply about exclusion.
